Dr Chia graduated from University Malaya in 1981 and completed his training in Paediatric Surgery in 1990 after training stints in various centre; including the Sydney Children Hospital, Yorkhill Children’s Hospital in Glasgow and Children Hospital in Great Ormond Street London. He was then appointed consultant paediatric surgeon at the Paediatric Institute, Hospital Kuala Lumpur in January 1991. He developed an interest in paediatric reconstructive urology and developed extensive experience in the management of children with DSD, exstrophy and cloacal anomaly.
He was awarded the Tun Razak research award 1991 for research on tracheal stenosis, and held several IRPA research grants and a member of the research review committee of the Institute of Medical Research, Malaysia,
He has made numerous presentations at national and international meetings particularly in the topics of DSD, exstrophy and cloacal anomaly and has been invited as speaker and main faculty at various national and international workshops particularly on the topics of exstrophy reconstruction, management of Disorder of sex Development and cloacal malformation.
From 2007 Dr Chia started to work in both Australia and Malaysia. He continues to develop and share his experience in the management of children with DSD, cloacal anomaly and exstrophy. From 2012 has made regular visits to Chittagong to run regular workshops in the management of exstrophy and continue to run regular workshops in Malaysia in the management of DSD, cloacal malformation and exstrophy.
He currently holds the position of consultant in paediatric surgery and paediatric urology in Royal Hobart Hospital in Australia and Elite Fellow in Paediatric Urology with the University of Malaya in Malaysia.
